Olaplex for Fine Hair: The Nº.4FINE Shampoo, What It Can Do for Thinning Hair, and What to Skip

Olaplex makes a fine-hair shampoo and conditioner, Nº.4FINE and Nº.5FINE, and if your hair is fine those are the ones to buy, not the famous originals. Olaplex's own page says the original Nº.4 and Nº.5 are for medium to coarse hair.

What Olaplex cannot do is treat thinning. Bond building works on the hair shaft, not the follicle, and no Olaplex product claims to grow hair. Below is the range sorted for fine hair, with prices from Olaplex's site and what each claim actually measured.

From the editor

Most fine-haired clients who tell me Olaplex made their hair flat were using Nº.5, Nº.6 or Nº.7. Those are rich, silicone-forward products made for hair that needs smoothing.

Olaplex is genuinely useful for fine hair that has been bleached or coloured. For fine hair that has never been processed, you are mostly paying for a nice shampoo.

The short verdict

Fine hair: Nº.4FINE and Nº.5FINE, sold together as the Double Volume Fine Hair Set ($61). Fine and bleached: add Nº.3PLUS on the lengths before you wash. Leave-in: Nº.9 Bond Protector, the lightest Olaplex styler.

Skip or limit: the original Nº.4 and Nº.5, Nº.6 Bond Smoother and Nº.7 Bonding Oil. All carry silicones high in the ingredient list.

What bond building does, and what it can't do

Olaplex's patented ingredient, bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, is sold as rebuilding the disulfide bonds that bleach and colour break. A 2025 lab study found Olaplex Nº.0 measurably improved the strength of bleached hair fibres.

The mechanism is less settled. A 2021 spectroscopy study of maleate-type treatments on bleached hair found no increase in disulfide bonds in the hair cortex, although the surface looked smoother. Either way, the effect is on hair that has been chemically damaged.

None of this touches the follicle, which is where thinning happens. The American Academy of Dermatology names minoxidil as the most recommended treatment for female pattern hair loss; see thinning hair treatment for the options.

The Olaplex products that weigh fine hair down

Nº.4 and Nº.5 (the originals) are made, in Olaplex's words, for medium to coarse textures. Nº.5 carries a dimethicone copolymer, amodimethicone and argan, avocado and grape-seed oils.

Nº.6 Bond Smoother lists dimethicone third, and Nº.7 Bonding Oil lists dimethicone first. Both are good on frizz; on fine hair use half a pump or one drop on the ends, or skip them.

The Weightless Nourishing Mask ($44) is sold for fine to medium hair, but it also contains amodimethicone and dimethicone. Use it on the lengths and rinse well.

Do you need Nº.0 for fine hair?

Only if your hair is bleached, coloured or relaxed. Nº.0 is four ingredients, water, the bond builder and two preservatives, and Olaplex itself says it is not meant to be used alone. On fine hair that has never been processed there is nothing for it to repair.

Does Olaplex cause hair loss?

In 2023 a group of customers sued Olaplex, alleging its products caused hair loss and breakage, and NPR reported that the complaint pointed to lilial, a fragrance ingredient the EU phased out in 2022. These were allegations, never decided by a court.

According to Olaplex's own annual report to the SEC, the court dismissed the claims in July 2023, the last plaintiff withdrew, and none had re-filed. None of the current ingredient lists we read in October 2026 contains lilial.

If you notice new shedding after any product change, stop the product and see a dermatologist, and read why is my hair thinning? for the common causes.

A simple Olaplex routine for fine hair

If your hair is lightened, apply Nº.3PLUS to damp lengths for three minutes. Wash with Nº.4FINE, condition from the ears down with Nº.5FINE, then mist Nº.9 on towel-dried hair before blow-drying.

On second day, a short burst of Nº.4D at the roots is enough. Our how to blow-dry fine hair guide covers the drying itself.

FAQ

Parts of it are. Nº.4FINE and Nº.5FINE are made for fine hair and are silicone-free. The original Nº.4 and Nº.5, Nº.6 and Nº.7 are richer and carry silicones, so they tend to flatten fine hair. Olaplex helps most when fine hair has been bleached or coloured.

Nº.4FINE Bond Maintenance Volumizing Shampoo. It is sulfate-free and silicone-free with flexible styling polymers, and Olaplex sells it with Nº.5FINE as the Double Volume Fine Hair Set for $61.

It can make thin, damaged hair stronger and easier to style, but it does not treat thinning. Bond builders work on the hair shaft, not the follicle, and no Olaplex product claims to grow hair or reduce shedding.

Nº.4FINE is the volumizing, silicone-free version for fine hair. The original Nº.4 is for medium to coarse hair, according to Olaplex, and contains amodimethicone and argan oil.

A 2023 lawsuit alleged that it did, but the claims were dismissed and not re-filed, according to Olaplex’s SEC filings, and they were never proven. The current ingredient lists we checked do not contain lilial, the ingredient the complaint focused on.

Often, yes. Dimethicone is its first ingredient. On fine hair, use one drop on dry ends only, or choose the water-based Nº.9 Bond Protector instead.

Yes, the Scalp Longevity Treatment, a leave-in for scalp hydration and barrier. It makes no claims about hair growth, shedding or density.
