Nioxin for Thinning Hair: Which System Kit to Choose, and What It Can Really Do

Nioxin is a salon scalp-care system that makes thinning hair look fuller. It does not regrow hair. The current kits contain no minoxidil, and the brand's "thicker, fuller hair in 30 days" figure comes from a consumer survey.

That still makes it useful for some people. Below is how the four System Kits differ, which one to buy, what the formula does to fine hair, and when to pick something else.

From the editor

Nioxin is the brand salons hand to clients who say "my hair feels thinner". Used that way, as a cosmetic boost while you work out the cause, it is fine.

Where it goes wrong is when it delays a diagnosis. Thirty days of fuller-looking hair can hide a year of real thinning.

The short verdict

Nioxin is a good choice if your hair is fine or lightly thinning and you want it to look and feel fuller with a single, simple routine. The cleanser lifts the root and the leave-in treatment adds a little body.

It is the wrong tool if you want to slow genuine hair loss. Nothing in the current kits is an approved hair-loss treatment, and there is no independent controlled trial of the system.

The four Nioxin System Kits, explained

Nioxin used to sell six numbered systems. In 2024 it moved to four, and its sites now list only System Kits 1 to 4. You choose by two questions: is your hair natural or chemically treated, and is the thinning light or progressed?

KitHair typeThinning
System Kit 1Natural, untreatedLight
System Kit 2Natural, untreatedProgressed
System Kit 3Coloured, damaged or dryLight
System Kit 4Coloured, damaged or dryProgressed

Kits 3 and 4 add colour protection and more moisture, which matters if your fine hair is highlighted or bleached. Kits 2 and 4 are aimed at more visible thinning; Nioxin's US blog says Kit 2 also contains UV-protection ingredients.

If you used the old System 5, it now maps to Kit 3. Old System 6 is less clear: Nioxin's US blog points to Kit 2 and its UK site to Kit 4. Since System 6 was for chemically treated hair, Kit 4 is the logical replacement.

Which Nioxin kit for fine hair?

Most readers with fine hair that has started to look sparse should start with Kit 1 if their hair is natural, or Kit 3 if it is coloured. "Progressed" means clearly visible scalp, and if that describes you, the kit is not the first thing to buy.

Not sure whether you are fine-haired or thinning? Fine hair or thinning? walks through the checks.

What is in a Nioxin kit

Each kit has three steps: a cleanser (shampoo), a scalp and hair conditioner, and a leave-in scalp and hair treatment. Nioxin tells you to leave the cleanser on for one minute and the conditioner for one to three minutes, and to use the full system at least three times a week.

On the System 1 formula listed at Ulta, the cleanser pairs salicylic acid, niacinamide, biotin and panthenol with peppermint oil and plant extracts, on a sulfate base. The leave-in treatment adds caffeine and methyl nicotinate, a warming ingredient that is the likely source of the tingle people describe.

Does Nioxin work? What the claims rest on

Nioxin says 8 out of 10 users saw thicker, fuller hair in 30 days. The footnote on its Ulta listing traces that to a 2016 survey of 230 US panelists, in which 80 to 85% reported a thickening effect, more density or more fullness.

That is a perception survey, not a trial with hair counts and a placebo group. The effect people notice is real but cosmetic: a clean, slightly roughened strand stands up more, and the leave-in adds body. It stops when you stop using it.

Does Nioxin contain minoxidil?

The System Kits never did. Nioxin did sell separate minoxidil products, a 2% Hair Regrowth Treatment for women and a 5% Extra Strength for men, but their US drug listings show marketing ended on 31 December 2024, and neither Nioxin's site nor Ulta lists them now.

If you want minoxidil, it is widely sold under other brands. Our guide to thinning hair treatments explains who it suits and how long it takes.

Nioxin on fine hair: the downsides

The cleanser is a sulfate shampoo, which is fine on an oily scalp but can dry out long or coloured fine lengths. Shampoo the scalp only and keep the conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends.

The leave-in treatment tingles, and some users report itching or irritation, so patch-test it before using it all over. Nioxin itself acknowledges some users notice extra shedding in the first weeks. Shedding that continues past six weeks is worth a doctor's visit; see why is my hair thinning?

Price, and whether it is worth it

On Ulta in October 2026 the numbered kits cost $38 to $57 depending on size, and the single products $27 to $53. As a complete three-step routine, that is mid-priced for a salon brand.

It is worth it if you like the feel and want one routine that makes thin hair look fuller. It is not worth it as a hair-loss treatment, because it is not one.

FAQ

It makes thinning hair look and feel fuller, which is what Nioxin claims. It does not regrow hair or treat hair loss. Its “8 out of 10 users saw thicker, fuller hair in 30 days” figure comes from a 2016 consumer survey of 230 people, not a controlled trial.

Kit 1 for natural hair with light thinning, Kit 2 for natural hair with progressed thinning, Kit 3 for coloured or damaged hair with light thinning, and Kit 4 for coloured or damaged hair with progressed thinning.

No. Nioxin moved from six kits to four in 2024. Old System 5 maps to Kit 3. Nioxin’s own pages disagree on old System 6 (Kit 2 on the US blog, Kit 4 on the UK site); Kit 4 is the logical match for chemically treated hair.

The System Kits do not. Nioxin used to sell separate 2% and 5% minoxidil regrowth treatments, but their US listings show marketing ended at the end of 2024.

The leave-in scalp treatment contains methyl nicotinate, a warming ingredient, and the cleanser contains peppermint oil. A mild tingle is expected; burning, itching or redness is a reason to stop and patch-test.

Nioxin acknowledges that some people notice extra shedding in the first weeks. If shedding continues beyond about six weeks, or comes with itching or redness, stop and see a doctor.

Nioxin says to use the full three-step system at least three times a week: cleanser for one minute, conditioner for one to three minutes, then the leave-in treatment on the scalp.
